Oral Bacteria Screening

Dental Diseases

Oral microbiology is the study of the oral cavity microorganisms and the interactions between the oral microorganisms and the host. Of particular interest is oral microorganisms’ role in the two major dental diseases: dental caries andperiodontal disease.

Dental Caries:

Dental caries refers to tooth decay as a result of tooth damage from certain bacteria in the mouth. When particular decay-causing bacteria creates acids that attack the tooth’s surface (enamel), it can ultimately lead to a small hole in the teeth, or what we refer to as cavities.

When left untreated, dental caries can lead to chronic pain, infection, and tooth loss.

Periodontal Disease:

Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease, and it pertains to inflammatory conditions that affect the tissues around the teeth. In its earliest stages, periodontal disease may result in swollen, red, and bleeding gums, or what is known as gingivitis. Eventually, it can develop into periodontitis. In this case, the gums can pull away from the teeth. Teeth may become loose or even fall out, along with bone loss and bad breath.

Oral Bacteria Screening

The mouth harbors a diverse, abundant and complex microbial community. This highly diverse microflora inhabits the various surfaces of the normal mouth. Certain oral bacteria have been linked to major health concerns, including heart disease. Oral bacteria screening is highly recommended. We use OraTec phase contrast microscopy.

During your routine hygienist visit, a plaque sample may be collected and examined under a microscope. If there is a reason for concern due to the presence of unhealthy bacteria, the hygienist will discuss possible ways to improve your mouth flora, which could include Ozone Therapy.
